Carpet and upholstery clean checklist
Fabric holds a stain and a smell far longer than a hard surface does, and both get worse with the wrong first step. Work out what the fabric is before reaching for anything wet.

The items
- Fabric identified before choosing a productThe care label under a cushion usually says whether it's safe for water at all.
- Product tested on a hidden patch firstThe underside of a cushion or the back of an arm. Some fabrics discolour with products that are fine on others.
- Loose items removed and cushions taken off before vacuuming
- Carpet or upholstery vacuumed thoroughly
- Under cushions and down the sides of the sofa
- Skirting boards and edges where a vacuum head misses
- Fresh stains blotted, never rubbedRubbing spreads a stain into fabric that was still clean. Blot inward from the edge instead.
- Appropriate stain remover applied and left to work before rinsing
- Carpet shampooed or a hired cleaner used for ground-in dirtWorth hiring rather than buying for an occasional job — the machines used professionally pull out far more water and dirt.
- Mattress vacuumed on both sides, seams includedDust and skin cells collect in the seams more than anywhere else on a mattress.
- Mattress spot-cleaned and left to dry fully before the bed's made upLonger than it looks — often the better part of a day with a window open.
- Baking soda left on carpet or a mattress before vacuuming, for odourA few hours minimum, longer for a strong smell. Vacuum it up thoroughly afterwards or it works its way into the pile.
- Curtains or fabric blinds cleaned or laundered if they're washable
- Rugs lifted and the floor underneath cleaned, not just the rug itself
- Windows opened while everything driesDamp fabric dries faster with airflow than in a closed, warm room.
- Fabric protector reapplied once everything's completely dry, if it's used

Questions people ask
- Should I test a cleaning product before using it on the whole sofa?
- Yes, always, on a hidden patch first — the underside of a cushion or the back of the arm. Some fabrics discolour or watermark with products that are fine on others.
- What's the biggest mistake with a fresh stain?
- Rubbing it. Blot instead, working inward from the edge, so the stain doesn't spread further into fabric that was still clean.
- How long does a mattress actually take to dry after a wet clean?
- Longer than it looks — often the better part of a day with a window open or a fan running. Making the bed up before it's fully dry traps damp underneath.
